Rebuilding Communities Ravaged by Natural Disaster
Women Beyond Survival in Haiti January 21-29, 2010 after the January 12, 2010 devastating earthquake
On January 12, 2010 Haiti was struck by a devastating and catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake. On January 21st 2010, Safiyya Sarkin Executive Director of Women Beyond Survival (WBS) traveled to Haiti with her very dear Haitian-American friend Activist/Artist Smith Georges with medical supplies, which were distributed to doctors, nurses and victims. Smith and Safiyya also administered topical first aid to the injured victims in many affected areas in order to prevent infection, including the epicenter, the interior of Leogane, where they were the first people to arrive on site to provide medical assistance. These particular regions had no access to any form of medical aid prior to their arrival. Smith and Safiyya slept on the street like everyone else.
WBS and Children Forum 21 plan to build two community centers, one in Leogane and one in Petit Goave. Each community center will include physician, nurses, teachers, care takers, cooks, secretary, artistic activities and sports. There will be approximately thirty orphan in each site. There will be a school and a clinic inclusive in these centers.

The UN (MINUSTAH) troops fired gun shots in the air while the people were orderly waiting in line, which then created mayhem causing a very organized crowd to run in scattered directions.
